Peptide Basics
(5)
A peptide is a short chain of amino acids linked together by peptide bonds. Amino acids are the fundamental building blocks of proteins, and peptides can be thought of as smaller, simpler structures compared to full proteins. In scientific and laboratory settings, peptides are studied for their structural, signaling, and biochemical properties. Peptides typically contain between 2 and 50 amino acids, while proteins consist of much longer and more complex amino acid sequences.
Peptides and proteins are closely related but not the same. Both are composed of amino acids linked by peptide bonds, but peptides are generally shorter chains (typically 2-50 amino acids), while proteins consist of much longer and more complex amino acid sequences that fold into specific three-dimensional structures. In scientific research, peptides are often studied as simpler models to better understand biological processes at a molecular level.
An amino acid is a single organic molecule that serves as a basic building block of peptides and proteins. A peptide is formed when two or more amino acids are linked together in a chain through peptide bonds. In simple terms, amino acids are individual units, while peptides are short chains made from those units. The 20 standard amino acids encoded by the genetic code can be arranged in countless sequences to form different peptides with distinct biological properties.
No. Peptides and steroids are fundamentally different types of compounds. Steroids are lipid-based molecules derived from cholesterol and have a distinct chemical structure and biological role. Peptides, on the other hand, are composed of amino acids and are structurally related to proteins. Because of these differences, peptides and steroids behave differently in biological systems and are studied for entirely separate scientific purposes.
"Research Use Only" (RUO) indicates that a product is manufactured and sold exclusively for use in scientific research, including in vitro studies, animal model investigations, and other preclinical laboratory applications. RUO compounds have not been approved by the FDA or any other regulatory body for therapeutic, diagnostic, or human consumption purposes. All peptides listed on our website carry this designation and must be used in accordance with applicable laws and institutional guidelines.
Research & Quality
(5)
Most research peptides are manufactured through solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), a method pioneered by Bruce Merrifield in 1963. In SPPS, amino acids are sequentially attached to an insoluble resin support, with each coupling step followed by deprotection and washing cycles. After the full sequence is assembled, the peptide is cleaved from the resin and purified — typically using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This process allows for precise control over sequence, length, and modifications such as acetylation or amidation.
Peptide purity is determined primarily through analytical HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography), which separates the target peptide from synthesis byproducts, truncated sequences, and other impurities. The purity percentage reflects the proportion of the desired full-length peptide relative to all detected species in the chromatogram. Additional methods such as mass spectrometry (MS) confirm molecular identity and weight. Our peptides maintain stringent purity testing standards, with the majority of products exceeding 98% purity.
Yes. Every batch includes a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) that documents the purity, identity verification (via mass spectrometry), and analytical results (HPLC chromatograms). Researchers may review these documents before purchase or request additional information through our support team. The CoA serves as the official quality documentation for each produced batch.
Yes, all products undergo independent third-party analysis to verify purity and identity. This independent verification ensures that the documented purity levels are accurate and trustworthy. The combination of in-house quality control and third-party testing provides the highest level of quality assurance for research materials.
Peptides are widely used in laboratory research because their defined structures allow scientists to study molecular interactions, biochemical pathways, and cellular processes in a controlled manner. Researchers may use peptides to investigate protein behavior, receptor interactions, tissue repair mechanisms, metabolic regulation, or analytical methods. Many bioactive peptides act as hormones, neurotransmitters, or growth factors, and studying their activity helps researchers understand the larger protein systems they interact with.
Storage & Handling
(5)
Store lyophilized vials at -20°C in a non-frost-free freezer, protected from light and moisture. Properly stored, peptides remain stable for 3-5 years. For the long-term storage of peptides, we recommend that peptides be stored as a solid powder. Lyophilized peptides stored at -20°C or lower experience minimal degradation. Peptides in solution are much less stable and are susceptible to degradation.
Most researchers reconstitute with bacteriostatic water or sterile acetic acid (for certain sequences). Use bacteriostatic water for initial reconstitution. Add solvent slowly down the vial wall. Do not shake — gently swirl until dissolved. Each peptide may have specific solubility characteristics; we recommend reviewing the product data sheet for peptide-specific guidance. To prevent any damage caused by repeated freeze-thaw cycles, we recommend only dissolving the amount of peptide needed for the immediate experiment.
Lyophilized peptides stored at -20°C typically maintain stability for 24+ months. Once reconstituted, store at 2-8°C and use within 30 days. Peptides containing methionine, cysteine, or tryptophan residues should have limited storage time in solution due to oxidation. These peptides should be dissolved in oxygen-free solvents where possible. Always follow proper laboratory storage procedures and avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles.
As moisture greatly reduces the long-term stability of peptides, we recommend allowing the peptide to equilibrate to room temperature in a desiccator before opening the vial. This prevents condensation from forming inside the container. Once the peptide has been dispensed, any remaining peptide in the tube should be gently purged with anhydrous nitrogen, the container recapped, sealed with parafilm, and stored at -20°C.
All peptides are listed by total peptide content (mg). Bacteriostatic water and lab solutions are listed by milliliters (mL). The industry standard is to deliver peptides in lyophilized form and to state the delivery amount as the weight of the lyophilized powder. The gross weight contains the peptide of interest (including impurities), water, and trace amounts from the purification process. Always verify the theoretical molecular weight against the documented analytical report before performing laboratory calculations.
